Green ‘Thumbs-up’ for £35 million regeneration project
The impressive Greenfields Place development from One Vision Housing was granted planning approval this week (Wednesday 22 July 2009) after Sefton's planning committee unanimously approved the scheme.
The five year project, located in the Marsh Lane area of Bootle, Sefton will see the housing association invest over £35 million and will completely transform the area around St James’ Place.
The focal point of the development will see the complete refurbishment and extension of four existing tower blocks (Mersey, Stanley, Chesnut and Salisbury House) creating 32 new homes and providing a stunning new look for the area.
The plans were passed with strong support from local Ward Councillors John Fairclough, Doreen Kerrigan and Gordon Friel who have all put their full support behind the project.
One of the most important elements of the Greenfields Place project will see the use of extensive landscaping and boundary treatments to tackle the longstanding problems with crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.
Developed in consultation with the Police the entire site will be remodelled according to secured by design principles to create a safer, cleaner and greener environment for the residents to enjoy.
Cllr John Fairclough said: “Through these proposals OVH is targeting the problem head on and the plans to create a secure community will not only encourage a sense of pride in the area but will provide a real and practical solution to the problems of ASB, crime and nuisance behaviour, which have blighted the area for many years.”
The news has come as a welcome boost to the local economy and it is expected that up to 70 jobs could be created over the next five years.
One Vision Housing Chief Executive Roy Williams said: “The approval by Sefton Council of these proposals has demonstrated clearly that they share our vision that in order to tackle the longstanding problems experienced in the area with any degree of success a new and radical approach is needed.
“At a time when many organisations are considering taking down high rise blocks we believe that by investing in the existing community the Greenfields Place project will act as a major catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area, which has been a failing neighbourhood for over 30 years.
“These measures will provide renewed support for the local community, whilst at the same time providing our customers with premier-class homes that they can enjoy in safety away from the blight of ASB and crime.”
Cllr Ian Moncur, chair of Sefton Council\'s planning committee, said: "Our planners have worked closely with One Vision Housing to help develop this scheme.
"The project will completely enhance the visual appearance of the blocks while creating 32 new apartments close to shops, services and public transport.
"There are also significant physical improvements that many residents have asked for - such as improved security, secure communal gardens and the planting of 99 new trees.
“This is a very exciting scheme which will make a real difference to the lives of people in the area."
